In the field of industrial safety and protection, there are many misunderstandings regarding whether 100% cotton shirts are flame retardant. As a protective clothing manufacturer with 20 years of professional experience, Xinke Protective will scientifically analyze the true flame retardancy of pure cotton fabrics and provide professional safety advice.
First, it must be made clear that 100% cotton shirts without special treatment are not inherently flame retardant. Cotton is a natural cellulose fiber. Its combustion characteristics are: it will continuously burn when exposed to fire, with a burning speed of approximately 0.8-1.5 cm/s and a burning temperature exceeding 400°C. It will form a char and may continue to smolder. This characteristic makes ordinary pure cotton fabrics a safety hazard rather than a protective barrier in industrial fires or arc flash incidents.
From a molecular perspective, cotton fiber is primarily composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. The hydroxyl group (-OH) in its chemical structure makes it highly flammable. At temperatures of around 210°C, cotton fiber begins to thermally decompose, producing flammable gases. Violent combustion occurs at temperatures of 400°C. This stands in stark contrast to specialized flame-retardant fabrics like Xinke Protective’s FRDURATEX®, which achieve self-extinguishing properties through molecular structure modification.
A common misconception in the market is that “pure cotton is safer than chemical fibers.” This belief stems in part from concerns about the dripping phenomenon of certain synthetic fibers. Indeed, some synthetic fibers (such as ordinary polyester) produce high-temperature dripping when burned, potentially causing secondary damage. However, modern specialized flame-retardant fabrics like Xinke’s FRARCTEX® series have completely addressed this issue through special treatments, offering protection far exceeding that of ordinary pure cotton.
It is worth noting that pure cotton fabrics can be temporarily flame-retarded through post-processing. Such treatments typically use phosphorus- or nitrogen-based flame retardants, enabling the fabric to pass flame retardancy tests such as EN ISO 11612. However, this flame-retardant effect diminishes with repeated washings, typically becoming ineffective after 20-30 washes. Xinke Protective recommends that for industrial environments requiring frequent cleaning, permanent flame-retardant fabrics such as FRDURATEX® should be preferred over post-processed flame-retardant cotton products.
From a safety standards perspective, truly flame-retardant clothing must pass rigorous international certification tests. For example, the EN ISO 11612 standard requires that fabrics exhibit an afterflame time of no more than 2 seconds in a vertical burn test, a damage length of no more than 100mm, and no dripping. Ordinary cotton shirts simply fail to meet these requirements. Xinke Protective advises that when purchasing protective equipment, it is important to verify the certification information on the product label and avoid misleading claims such as “pure cotton is naturally flame-retardant.”
In actual industrial applications, the wrong choice of protective gear can have serious consequences. We handled a typical case in which a refinery worker wearing ordinary cotton overalls was welding. Sparks ignited the clothing, resulting in severe burns. Subsequent testing revealed that the cotton overalls had an afterflame time of 25 seconds, indicating they were not flame-retardant at all. The accident could have been avoided if Xinke Protective had been wearing professional welding protective clothing that complies with EN ISO 11611.
Xinke Protective offers professional advice tailored to the needs of different industries: The petrochemical and power generation industries should choose permanent flame-retardant clothing that complies with EN ISO 11612; welding operations should choose products that comply with EN ISO 11611; and electrical workers, who face arc risks, should choose arc-resistant clothing certified to EN 61482. The protective performance of these specialized protective clothing far exceeds that of ordinary cotton shirts.
As a professional manufacturer with multiple international certifications, including ISO 9001 and UL, Xinke Protective emphasizes that industrial safety and protection leave no room for chance. With 800 dedicated employees and 28 advanced production lines, all products undergo six rigorous quality inspection procedures. In an industry where life safety is at stake, choosing certified professional protective equipment is the right choice to be responsible to your employees.
