Factory Customized High-Quality Flame Retardant Arc-Proof Work Clothes

In many areas of modern industry, especially in electricity, petrochemicals, metallurgy, railways, etc., workers deal with electricity every day. Although electricity brings convenience and power, it also hides a very destructive danger – arc flash.

Arc flash is a sudden, extremely short-lived but energy-intensive arc discharge phenomenon. It can instantly generate high temperatures of up to thousands or even tens of thousands of degrees Celsius, accompanied by strong electromagnetic radiation, dazzling light, loud noises and pressure waves, and may produce toxic smoke and molten metal splashes. The burns caused are often deep and fatal. Although conventional flame-retardant work clothes can prevent themselves from burning, they are not enough to provide adequate protection under such extreme thermal energy shocks. For this reason, a more professional personal protective equipment came into being – flame-retardant arc-proof clothing.

Flame-retardant arc-proof clothing is designed and tested on the basis of basic flame-retardant properties, especially for the dangers of arc flash. Its core function is not to prevent arc flash from happening (which is the task of electrical safety operating procedures), but to serve as an important barrier between the operator’s body and extreme heat energy when arc flash occurs, to minimize the transfer of heat to the skin, and to prevent or reduce the occurrence of second-degree or third-degree burns. Qualified arc-proof clothing will not ignite, melt and drip, or break to form holes when exposed to arc energy, but will quickly carbonize to form an insulating layer, buying precious escape time for the wearer or reducing the degree of injury.

The key indicator for measuring the protective performance of flame-retardant arc-proof clothing is its Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) or Energy Breakopen Threshold (EBT). These values are obtained by simulating arc flash under controlled conditions and testing the heat barrier ability of clothing materials. ATPV refers to the maximum incident energy (usually measured in cal/cm²) that clothing can withstand before causing second-degree burns to the skin. EBT is similar to ATPV, but it measures the threshold at which a material’s energy transfer increases due to physical rupture. According to international electrical safety standards such as NFPA 70E, workplaces are required to conduct arc flash hazard analysis to determine the potential incident energy, and then select protective clothing with an ATPv or EBT rating higher than that incident energy value to ensure adequate protection. This means that different work areas or tasks may require arc-proof clothing with different levels of protection.

Choosing the right flame-retardant arc-proof clothing is not just about looking at the ATPv/EBT value, the fabric composition, structural design, and accessories of the clothing are also crucial. Common high-performance arc-proof fabrics include flame-retardant treated cotton, aramid fiber (Aramid), flame-retardant viscose, and blended fabrics. These fabrics must pass rigorous arc tests and be certified. Clothing design also needs to consider safety, such as using arc-proof zippers, buttons, and sewing threads, and avoiding the use of easily fusible metal or plastic accessories. For operations that require a higher level of protection, it may be necessary to wear a multi-layer arc-proof clothing system, including arc-proof underwear and outer clothing, each of which contributes to the total ATPv/EBT value. Fit is also very important. Clothing that is too tight or too loose may affect the protection effect or increase the risk of hooking.

So, who needs to wear flame-retardant arc-proof clothing? Simply put, all workers who may be exposed to arc flash hazard areas need this protection. This includes but is not limited to the installation, maintenance, and operation of power systems (such as electrical engineers, maintenance electricians, linemen, substation operators), electrical maintenance workers in industrial enterprises, workers involved in high-voltage equipment, and maintenance personnel of certain railway electrification systems. Equipping these personnel with arc-proof clothing that meets the requirements is an indispensable part of enterprises protecting the lives of employees, fulfilling their safety responsibilities, and complying with regulatory requirements.
